Summer is here and is in full swing, as is the heat and humidity. We hope everyone is able to spend some time outside enjoying time with family and friends, baseball games and summer vacations.
Let’s recap June! We had 3 families that were granted interlocutory, one step closer to finalization! We had three new expectant parents start the adoption process with Adoption Circle, one of which is now matched with a family. The other two are working towards being matched and should be very soon.
In June we celebrated Father’s Day! We hope fathers were able to spend some quality time with their kiddos. Father’s Day can be an emotional holiday within the adoption community. So many adoptees have little to no information on their biological father, and adoptive fathers are often forgotten or not recognized during the infertility process and the adoption waiting period of time. While this day brings challenges, we hope that you all were able to find joy on this day.
The month of June brought summer vacations for many of us! We all had much needed time relaxing and recharging our batteries. Have you been reading any good books, articles or listening to any podcasts about adoptive parenting while poolside? If so, and you want to share, please consider writing a review! We would love to share with other adoptive parents. Do you follow us on social media? Please consider doing so if you do not, and share your pictures with us so we can stay up to date with your kiddoes and family 😊

June was PRIDE Month! And in true summer fashion there was a parade and summer festival celebration. Pride month, formerly called Gay Pride Month, is celebrated all of June and recognized and commemorates LGTBQ+ pride. It began after the Stonewall Riots of 1969 and is celebrated not only in the United States but in other countries as well. Did you know that it wasn’t until 2016 that it was legal in ALL the US states for same sex couples to adopt?

With summer comes HEAT!! The temperatures are predicted to get high this week, so we thought it was important to remind you that children can and do suffer from heat related illnesses including heat cramps, heat exhaustion and even heat stroke. So many youths play summer sports which puts them at higher risk for these related illnesses. Whether you plan to spend your summer days at the beach, pool or a baseball game please take care and stay hydrated!!
A Note from the Director of Birth Parent Services:
Hello! While I have spent as much of my free time as possible this past month at the baseball field watching my son play – I did make the time to watch the Frontline special on PBS “Baby Brokers”. The documentary focused on Utah and the questionable laws that previously existed in this state that had made it what many consider the “epicenter” of poor adoption practices. These practices lured pregnant women from their home states to Utah to place their baby for adoption with the promise of significant money after placement occurs. I had many thoughts while watching this show. The most prominent being: This isn’t “news” as it happened a LONG time ago. I personally heard about this occurring in the early 2000’s. I remember attorneys in Columbus telling me about a local adoption attorney that would collaborate with a Utah agency and would send all the expectant mothers that came to the attorney seeking adoption services to Utah. The Columbus attorneys shared that this was done because the families in Utah paid SIGNIFICANTLY greater attorney fees and Utah would finalize these adoptions, where Ohio would not. The expectant moms (along with their children) would be flown to Utah and would be given an apartment to live in. After placement occurred, they would be flown home and able to start a new life with the funds they received. If the mom decided to parent and not complete her adoption plan, the mom would not be afforded a trip home and was left abandoned in a state with no support system. OK – of course…this is unethical and inappropriate. BUT I’m still stuck at WHY in 2026 is this documentary highlighting horrific practices that were occurring 25 years ago? The laws in Utah have changed and so one could argue that these practices are no longer occurring. But we KNOW that there are always going to be questionable practices in adoption, so why isn’t there a documentary highlighting CURRENT questionable practices? Including current practices in Utah that still may be questionable. I wish there was a documentary that talked about how each and every state has different laws regarding the timing of when a biological parent can voluntarily terminate their parental rights, when a biological father can terminate their parental rights (some states allow this to happen prior to the child being born) and how much financial support a woman working on an adoption plan can receive while pregnant. It could be argued that unified adoption practices in the U.S. would prevent states from passing laws that would allow for unethical practices to occur. Do I recommend watching the documentary? Yes – I am always interested in knowing what was successful and not successful in the past so we can make better choices for the future.
We look forward to July and celebrating 250 years of Independence for the US. Please share all your July 4th celebrating pics. And as always, if you don’t already, follow us on our social medial platforms. FaceBook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube
